Purpose of Type C Track Circuits


Type C track circuits are used in railroad signaling because they provide strong train detection, reliable broken rail detection, and better performance in difficult operating environments.

One major safety benefit is continuous broken rail detection. Type C circuits can detect rail breaks even when a train is not occupying the track section.

Type C track circuits are also well suited for electrified railway territory. AC traction return current can interfere with simpler track circuits, but Type C circuits use dual frequencies and filtering to reduce that interference.

Their receiver equipment separates and analyzes the different frequencies so train detection and broken rail detection can be monitored independently.

Type C circuits can also be more reliable in adverse conditions such as changing ballast resistance, moisture, leakage, or electrical noise.

Because of these safety and reliability benefits, Type C track circuits are often used in critical locations such as high-speed lines, heavily trafficked corridors, and complex interlocking areas.
